How to Interpret the Smart Port Lights on a Smart Motor

Step 1: Ensure that the Smart Motor is plugged in

  • Plug the Smart Motor into a port of a powered-on V5 Robot Brain.

Step 2: Observe the light on the motor's Smart Port

The following are the possible states which the Smart Motor's Smart Port light could be in:

  • The Smart Port light is constantly illuminated with a red light. (Good Motor)
    • This means the Smart Motor is idle and receiving power.
  • The Smart Port light is rapidly flashing a red light. (Good Motor)
    • This means that the Smart Motor is under the control of the dashboard of the V5 Robot Brain's Devices Menu.
  • The Smart Port light is slowly flashing a red light. - once per second (Possible Bad Motor or V5 Robot Brain Smart Port)
    • This means that the Smart Motor is receiving power, but there is no communication between it and the V5 Robot Brain.
    • Troubleshooting Steps:
      1. Switch the Smart Cable connecting the Smart Motor to the V5 Robot Brain to a different port on the V5 Robot Brain.
      2. If the Smart Port light on the motor is still blinking slowly, email VEX Support at support@vex.com.
  • The Smart Port light is not illuminated. (Disconnected or Possible Bad Motor)
    • This means there is no power getting to the Smart Motor.
    • Troubleshooting Steps:
      1. Check that the Smart Port connections on both the Smart Motor and the V5 Robot Brain are secure.
      2. If the connections are secure and the motor's Smart Port Light is still not lighting up, swap out the current Smart Cable that connects the Robot Brain and the motor together with a different Smart Cable.
      3. If the Smart Port Light is still not lighting up, email VEX Support at support@vex.com.
